How Schools Can Balance Technology and Traditional Learning
A useful technology decision starts with the lesson, not the device. Students might read a printed passage, compare sources online, plan an argument in a notebook, and revise it digitally. Each change of format should have a reason.
Schools need to teach digital research, communication, and responsible tool use while protecting time for sustained reading, handwriting, discussion, and hands-on work. That requires more than asking whether students seem engaged: teachers need to see what students can explain, apply, or create afterward.

For educators: give each digital activity a purpose and an endpoint
Choose the simplest method that meets the objective and students’ access needs. A whiteboard explanation followed by notebook practice may be enough. An interactive map, simulation, or shared document may justify a different approach when it helps students do something the simpler option cannot do as well.
A five-step lesson check
- Name the learning outcome. Describe what students should understand, solve, explain, or produce. “Complete the app activity” describes an action, not the learning it should support.
- Identify the tool’s contribution. Is it providing feedback, access, visualization, research, or collaboration? If its only contribution is putting an existing task on a screen, reconsider the choice.
- Plan access and boundaries. Check age suitability, school approval, and accessibility. Tell students which resource to use, what they must produce, and when the digital portion ends.
- Include an independent checkpoint. Ask students to explain, draw, discuss, or solve something after the activity. Use an offline format where appropriate, while retaining necessary accessibility support.
- Review the work, not just completion. Look at explanations, mistakes, questions, and participation. If students finish quickly but cannot explain the concept, adjust the instruction or use a simpler method.
Example sequence: research followed by explanation
Students first write a question in their notebooks. They then compare two sources online, record relevant evidence, and explain their source choices to a partner. The teacher checks both the evidence selected and the reasoning behind the choice. The online search has a defined role; it does not occupy the whole lesson by default.
Suggested teacher wording: “Open the two sources listed for this task. Note one relevant claim from each and why you would trust it. After the comparison, we will discuss your choices away from the search results.”
Protect other routines explicitly: longer reading passages, handwritten planning where suitable, oral explanations, physical materials, and partner discussion. A student who contributes first through a shared document may still need a supported opportunity to discuss the idea aloud.
For school leaders: make balanced teaching possible
Teachers need permission to choose an appropriate method, rather than pressure to use a purchased platform in every lesson. They also need time to prepare. Technical demonstrations alone do not answer questions about classroom routines, accessibility, assessment, or when a tool should stay closed.
Before expanding device use or buying another platform, establish the following:
- An instructional purpose: identify the learning problem the tool is meant to address before purchasing it.
- Practical preparation: give teachers time to explore the tool, adapt lessons, plan for distractions, and share examples with colleagues.
- A review process: check data collection, student accounts, age suitability, accessibility, and relevant school requirements before adoption.
- A homework access plan: consider printed alternatives, downloadable resources, school work time, or loaned devices where available. Do not assume every household has reliable internet or a device available when needed.
- Clear communication: explain approved tools, expectations for independent work, and whom families should contact about access, privacy, or learning concerns.
Policies should be shared clearly enough that students do not have to guess which rules apply in each classroom. They should also leave room for curriculum differences and individual accessibility arrangements.
Seek appropriate support for decisions involving cybersecurity, student data, special education accommodations, major purchases, or legal requirements. Depending on the school, this may involve technology staff, curriculum specialists, accessibility coordinators, special education staff, or a data protection officer. General advice cannot determine a school’s specific obligations.
For parents and caregivers: ask about purpose, access, and expectations
A screen-based assignment and an evening of unrelated entertainment are different activities. To understand schoolwork, ask what the student is expected to learn and what the digital component contributes. Equally, an offline assignment should have a clear purpose rather than simply being presented as preferable because it uses paper.
Useful questions for the teacher include:
- What skill is this activity practicing?
- How much independent device use is expected outside school?
- What should my child do if the connection, device, or login fails?
- Is there an alternative way to complete the learning task if access is a problem?
- Where can I find information about the platform’s student data practices?
Suggested parent wording: “My child can do the reading, but we cannot reliably access the platform in the evening. Could you explain which part needs to be online and what alternative or school-based option is available?”
Describe the specific difficulty rather than making a general complaint about screens. An unavailable shared device, confusing instructions, and concern about data collection need different responses. Report barriers early and ask the school to confirm the next step; do not assume an alternative submission format has already been approved.
At home, families can make space for quiet reading, conversation about schoolwork, and handwritten planning where appropriate. Agree on routines for homework, device storage, and sleep. For students: know what the tool is helping you do

- Before opening a device: know the task, the approved resource, and what you need to produce.
- While researching: check whether a source is trustworthy and relevant, not just whether it appears to contain an answer.
- When using help: follow the teacher’s instructions about collaboration, citation, and independent work. Ask if the boundary is unclear.
- Before finishing: check whether you can explain the idea or method in your own words.
- If something blocks participation: tell the teacher about access, login, instructions, or accessibility difficulties rather than silently leaving the task incomplete.
Suggested student wording: “I finished the practice questions, but I still cannot explain this step. Could we go through one example together?”
Another useful request is: “I need the text enlargement to read this passage. How should I take part in the offline discussion?” Device routines should support participation, including students who need digital access tools.
What to do next: review one unit, not the entire curriculum
Choose one upcoming unit and mark its activities as offline, digital, or combined. Beside each digital activity, write the benefit it should provide and the student work that will help the teacher judge its usefulness. Note any access arrangements before assigning homework.
After the unit, review where students needed more explanation, where distractions interrupted work, and which activities helped them demonstrate understanding. Keep useful tools, revise weak sequences, and remove digital steps that added work without a clear learning benefit.
A remaining question about screen-time targets
Should schools aim for an equal split between digital and traditional learning?
There is no single percentage that fits every school, age group, or subject. A guided research task may need more device use than a discussion or handwriting lesson. Schools should review the purpose and quality of digital work while protecting meaningful time for reading, conversation, and hands-on practice. A fixed split should not override accessibility needs or replace judgment about the task.
